Search engine optimisationThe key to a successful web site is search engine optimisation (SEO). This is split into two main areas - onsite optimisation and offsite optimisation.

On site optimisation makes up around 30% of SEO for your website, whilst the remaining 70% is made up of off site factors (links from other websites that are directly linked to your website). A combination of both creates quality search engine optimisation.


Onsite optimisation:

Good onsite website optimisation will on its own be good for search engines. Your website should include a good title tag (the name of the page in the blue bar of a web browser). Also you will need a description tag - this is the sentence that entices the viewer to click on your listing in the search engines. You should also include keywords/key phrases in your keywords tag but make sure these keywords are also included in the body content of your page.

Offsite optimisation:


Basically offsite optimisation is the linking from other sites to your website not just linking to your home page but deep linking to pages/themes in your site. Done correctly, you can gain much higher rankings for your keywords.

Anchor text (the links from other sites) should target the keywords you want to rank for - it's best to have links from topical websites that are about your services/products. These are known as 'quality links'.

As a rule the more quality links you have pointing to your website the higher you will be in the search engines, but it is possible to gain higher rankings with fewer inbound links by theming your website in the correct way. This way you will be able to gain high rankings for lots and lots of keywords with less effort.
